What’s your phone screen repair bill?
If you’ve got a cracked screen, your local phone service provider might be able to fix it for you.
A new survey from the Insurance Information Institute of America (IIA) indicates that more than 30 percent of phone screen replacement plans in the U.S. are covering screen repair costs.
That means many consumers can expect to pay between $3,000 and $10,000 for a new screen, depending on the size and color of the screen.
“Many consumers are unable to pay for their screens with cash because they’re having problems finding insurance that covers them, so they’re getting help from insurance companies like Medi-Cal or the federal government,” said Michael Baca, a senior analyst with IIA’s Consumer Care Research Center.
The IIA survey, conducted last month, found that nearly one in five people nationwide have at least one insurance plan that covers screen replacement, and more than half of those plans covered the cost of screen repair for consumers who had the same type of problem.
That’s an indication that people are getting more creative in the cost and quality of their screen repair.
“If you’re struggling with your phone, you should probably consider purchasing a screen repair plan, whether you’re going to be in a big deductible or you’re trying to save money,” said Baca.
“It’s a good way to save some money, because you won’t have to pay any deductible or out-of-pocket expenses, and you’ll be covered for screen repair by your insurance.”
While many insurers have offered free screen repair plans in recent years, the IIA says there are many more that will cover screen repair at no cost, or for as low as $10 or $20 a month.
The two most popular screen repair options are a screen replacement and screen replacement with a new battery.
According to the IIP, screen replacement includes installing a new glass screen, replacing a broken screen or adding a new lens.
While most consumers will want to pay a little more than $3.25 for a screen screen replacement if they have a large deductible, Baca said that’s often a good value considering that most screen repair providers won’t cover the cost for an entire repair.
It can be hard to find insurance that’s covering the cost, but you should always speak to your local insurance provider about your options, Bancosaid.
“When you go to your doctor and ask about screen replacement or screen repair, they’ll usually ask if you’re under the age of 18, and most of the insurance companies will be happy to take you through a few screens,” Baca added.
“A lot of people aren’t able to afford to buy a replacement screen, so it’s best to talk to your insurance provider to find out if a screen replace is covered.”
The IIA also found that screen replacement is the most popular method of screen replacement.
The most popular device that people said they would choose to replace their screen was the Apple iPhone 5S.
About one in four people said that they would replace their iPhone 5 with a Samsung Galaxy S7, and nearly half of the consumers said they’d get their phone screen repaired by MediCal.
That was followed by the LG G5, Samsung Galaxy Note5, HTC One, Motorola Droid Razr HD, HTC Vivid and Lenovo Yoga.
Bancasaid that the best way to keep your phone running smoothly and looking good is to have your screen repaired with the right repair provider.
“We also find that people often do not know what kind of repair they are getting,” Banconsaid.
